A fundraising appeal has been launched for a young woman from Florida who has strong connections in the Ballina area.

Earlier this year, 20-year-old Veronica Walsh suffered a serious spinal cord injury caused by a blood clot and is now on a very long road to recovery to regain her mobility and independence.

The costs involved in her intensive spinal cord rehabilitation treatment in Florida are substantial and the family’s medical insurance will not cover the treatment. Veronica has regained the use of her hands and arms, a remarkable achievement, but needs further treatment if she is to have a chance of walking again.

Veronica’s father Shane Walsh was born and raised on Creggs Road in Ballina and although he now lives in the United States, his roots remain firmly in Ballina. Shane's parents, who were well known in the community, both passed away in 2023, and the family suffered another heartbreaking loss when Shane's brother, Declan, passed away earlier this year.

Three of Shane’s closest friends Vincent Lang, Mickey Tighe and Patrick Egan, have set up a GoFundMe campaign to help support Veronica’s ongoing treatment and rehabilitation. She is currently at the Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, but the cost of this care is enormous.

“Medical expenses and related costs have already exceeded $100,000, and a further $100,000 is needed to allow Veronica to continue receiving the specialist rehabilitation that offers her the greatest hope of recovery,” said fundraiser organiser Vincent Lang.

“At this difficult time, we are asking the people of Ballina and the wider community to rally behind Veronica and her family. Your support will not only help with the financial burden of rehabilitation, nursing care, transportation, accommodation, and essential living expenses, but it will also remind Veronica and Shane that they are not facing this journey alone.”

Vincent added that every donation, no matter how small, will make a difference in helping Veronica to walk again.

“On behalf of Veronica, Shane, and their family, thank you sincerely for your kindness, generosity, and support,” said Vincent.
