Friends launch heartfelt campaign to help Mayo family

A campaign is underway to raise badly needed funds for an Irish family based overseas who are having to privately finance emergency medical treatment.

Caoimin Keeshan was just this summer diagnosed with an extremely aggressive, grade 4 malignant brain tumour. A native of Offaly and loving husband to Kathryn (neé Hennigan) from Foxford in Co Mayo, the couple have three wonderful children, Katie, Daithi and Caoimhe, two of whom are also Mayo born.

Caoimin has already undergone a gruelling seven-hour brain surgery which successfully removed 80% of the tumour. He is currently undergoing six weeks of radiation which will be followed by six months of chemotherapy.

Due to circumstances beyond the family’s control, medical insurance has not been applicable to their situation so friends in their ex-pat community, led by former Mayo hurling captain Aidan Connolly, have initiated a fundraising effort via GoFundMe to help offset what is an enormous financial burden. Connolly, of Galway's famed hurling family, is a close friend of Caoimin and the Keeshan family.

“Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of meeting Caoimin knows that he is a true gentleman, a dedicated family man and an avid supporter of all things Irish, Offaly and Mayo,” says Aidan.

The organisers have set a target of €150,000 and after 48 hours, the campaign had already raised more than €40,000.

If you can help with a donation or by sharing their story via social media, it would be greatly appreciated by Caoimin and his family. Visit here.
