First two candidates selected in this year's Mayo County Council elections

Cllr Michael Kilcoyne was elected on the first count in the Castlebar electoral area this evening.
The first two candidates in this year’s Mayo County Council elections have been elected this evening.
Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne topped the poll once again in the Castlebar constituency.
The perennial poll topper amassed a hugely impressive 2,405 first preference votes and was elected on the first count.
Fine Gael’s Ger Deere also surpassed the 1,878 quota. The Castlebar councillor secured 1,951 votes.
“I’m always in touch with the people locally. I have a clinic by and large every week and that sometimes turn into meeting people two or three times a week and dealing with the issues that people have,” said Cllr Kilcoyne.
“People are hurting. I’m not going to be able solve every problem on my own but I will keep highlighting them,” he added.
He said he was “humbled” that the people of Castlebar once again threw their support behind him.
“They know that I’m only a phone call away and will take their issue as if it was my own.” Ger Deere thanked his supporters for getting him over the line in the first count.
“The last time it was 4am in the morning. I’m so happy for my supporters and everyone.” “I am passionate about Castlebar and I intend to continue that work for the next five years,” he told the Western People.
