Fine Gael in East Mayo pays tribute to deceased party stalwart

There was a poignant gathering in Brickens to honour the memory of Fine Gael stalwart Michael Sloyan.

Brickens Community Centre witnessed a poignant gathering on Friday night, February 16th, as the community came together to commemorate and honour the late Michael Sloyan of Bekan, Claremorris. 

The occasion marked the renaming of the local Fine Gael Branch to the ‘Michael Sloyan Bekan Fine Gael Branch’, a fitting tribute to a man deeply woven into the fabric of his community.

Michael Sloyan’s impact on Bekan extended across various spheres, from his involvement in the local Fine Gael branch to his contributions to Bekan Parish Church and Choir, Bekan National School and the East Mayo Ramblers Group. A diverse array of attendees at the event reflected the breadth of his interests and passions.

Addressing the gathering, branch chairperson Michael Swords poignantly reminisced about the moment when news of Michael’s passing reverberated through the stunned community of Bekan. Mr Swords emphasised that Michael Sloyan "embodied all the qualities of community and leadership", sentiments echoed by speakers from both local and national political spheres.

Cllr John Cribbin fondly remembered Michael Sloyan as a "true friend and gentleman, a political heavyweight, and a man of wisdom’’. 

Alma Gallagher, local Fine Gael candidate in the upcoming elections, recounted Michael and the East Mayo Ramblers Group’s contributions and support during a fundraiser for the Community Hall in Ballyhaunis. Ms Gallagher highlighted Michael’s belief in her political aspirations and said he encouraged her to enter politics.

Speakers on the night included Cllr Michael Burke, Deputy Michael Ring, Deputy Alan Dillion, Maria Walsh MEP, and former MEP and constituency chairperson Jim Higgins. 

Tracey Sloyan, daughter of Michael, reminisced about her father’s deep affection for Bekan and its surrounding hinterland, as well as his unwavering dedication to politics and community involvement. She recounted the countless late nights he spent crafting political strategies, tirelessly canvassing on foot, and meticulously crunching numbers. Tracey expressed gratitude for the meaningful recognition bestowed on their family by renaming the local branch in honour of her late father. Their tributes underscored the profound impact Michael Sloyan had on his community and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.

The renaming of the local Fine Gael branch stands as a testament to Michael Sloyan’s enduring commitment to Bekan and its people, ensuring that his memory will continue to inspire and guide future generations. The ceremony concluded with refreshments served by the hall committee and many stories about Michael being exchanged over a cup of tea.
