Fencing erected after a tragedy targeted by vandals

Vandals targeted new Greenway fencing just days after it was completed.
A section of fencing erected following a tragic accident was vandalised just days after being completed.
The new fencing was erected between the Greenway walk and a dangerous section of the Castlebar town river.
The location was the scene of a tragic accident last July when a local man lost his life after falling into the river.
A petition was launched on social media calling on Castlebar Municipal District to carry out the works.
The petition raised concern about the poor standard of the fencing and the potential danger to local children playing in the area close to the town park at Rowan Drive.
Castlebar councillors also expressed displeasure with the standard of the fencing.
However, just days after the works were completed, the new fencing was targeted by vandals.
A meeting of Castlebar Municipal District heard that €10,000 was spent on improving the 500-metre section of fencing.
“It has been vandalised and that really needs dealing with,” said Cllr Michael Kilcoyne.
The Independent councillor said CCTV in the area needs to be examined in order to bring the culprits to justice.
Mayo County Council has reported the incident to Gardai and wants a full investigation to take place.
David Mellett, Head of Castlebar Municipal District, said the local authority is hoping that those responsible can be identified by CCTV. The damaged section of fencing has since been repaired by the council.
"It's disappointing it had to be rectified," said Mr Mellett.
