Exciting plans for former Gaeltacht college building

An exciting project is planned for the Gaeltacht village.

Mayo County Council is aiming to progress a project that will see the transformation of a former college in Tourmakeady.

Expressions of interest were sought by the council in March 2024 for project development supports under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, to prepare projects for more substantial funding application at a later stage. In conjunction with Forbartha Tuar Mhic Éadaigh Teo, Coiste Cultúr Teanga and Údarás na Gaeltachta, the council made a submission to the Department of Rural and Community Development for the development of the former Coláiste Connacht building in Tourmakeady.

The project is focused on restoring the existing infrastructure to create a dynamic Smart Village and Cultural Innovation Hub. Central to this vision is the restoration and repurposing of Coláiste Chonnacht buildings, which was established in 1905 under the auspices of the Gaelic League. This institution played a pivotal role in the cultural revival movement, nurturing the likes of Padraic Pearse, James Dillon, and Thomas Clarke, thus imbuing the building with a rich historical legacy. The renovated college will serve as the cornerstone of the Cultural Innovation Hub, providing state-of-the-art facilities such as training resource rooms, and digital hot-desk capabilities.
