End in sight for street signage saga in Mayo town

The signage saga has been ongoing in Killala for some time.

A long wait for street signage in Killala appears to be finally coming to an end, writes Paul O'Malley.

Mayo Co Council's senior executive engineer Orla Bourke acknowledged at last week’s meeting of Ballina Municipal District that there had been issues procuring the correct signage following extensive roadworks in the north Mayo town, but assured councillors the situation will soon be resolved.

“The signage has been delivered and will be installed and it is with the contractor now,” she said.

Her update came in the wake of frustrations shared by Fine Gael Cllr Jarlath Munnelly about the long time it had taken to get the signage installed.

“This has been going on for ages and I’m being made a fool of on a daily basis making representations about this. I could write a book of all the excuses I have been given,” he said. “Signs went up that were taken down again and I’m sick of it now at this stage.”

Cllr Michael Loftus said he had recently driven through Killala and noticed there was a lot of confusion about the right of way on the Quay Road in the town.
