Thirteen of the 30 seats on Mayo County Council have now been filled with counting of votes in the remaining four electoral areas set to resume at 10am this morning.

The two electoral areas where counting has been completed are Castlebar (seven seats) and Claremorris (six seats).

In Castlebar, the following councillors have been elected: Cllr Michael Kilcoyne (Independent), Cllr Ger Deere (Fine Gael), Cllr Blackie Gavin (Fianna Fáil), Cllr Al McDonnell (Fianna Fáil), Harry Barrett (Independent) and Cllr Donna Sheridan (Fine Gael). The only change in Castlebar is the election of Harry Barrett in place of Cllr Martin McLoughlin (Fianna Fáil).

In Claremorris, the following councillors have been elected: Cllr Patsy O’Brien (Independent), Cllr Richard Finn (Independent), Cllr Damien Ryan (Fianna Fáil), Alma Gallagher (Fine Gael), Paul Lawless (Aontú) and Cllr Michael Burke (Fine Gael). There are two new councillors in Claremorris – Alma Gallagher replaces retiring councillor John Cribbin and Paul Lawless took the seat of outgoing Fine Gael councillor Tom Connolly, from Claremorris.

Counting in the three-seat Belmullet Electoral Area is commencing at 10am with counting in the four-seat Swinford area expected to start at 2pm. Votes in the six-seat Ballina and four-seat Westport areas will not start until later in the day so it looks like another long day (and night!) at the count centre in the TF Royal Theatre.
