Deadline set for transfer of services to Uisce Éireann

Management at Mayo County Council have said the official transfer of water services to Uisce Éireann will be complete by the end of the year.

The matter was raised at the July meeting of the council by Cllr Michael Loftus who sought the official date for the formal break between the council's water services and Uisce Éireann, saying he was getting “an awful lot of phone calls on water issues but technically the council has no involvement” and pointing out that “a number of vehicles are still going around with the Mayo County Council logo on them, but they are actually Uisce Éireann”.

Director of Services Siofra Kilcullen stated that the transition process has been in hand since June 2023 and the deadline to finish it is December 2026. She added: “Staff are incrementally moving or being assigned internally or have chosen to move to Uisce Éireann. This has gradually being done over the last few years and is accelerating now, as the vacancies arise and people are being transferred.” 

Cllr Loftus asked would “some money be paid" by Uisce Éireann arising from the transition, to which Ms Kilcullen replied that the council would know in December if there are any “legacy costs”.
