Criticism of hedge-cutting in Mayo

A Claremorris councillor has said the standard of hedge cutting “on national primary and secondary roads is deplorable this year”, claiming that during the tendering process for the contract, it should have been established when the work would take place, as it is happening at nighttime when it can be dangerous.

At the October meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District, Cllr Richard Finn claimed the standards of hedge-cutting have "totally degraded from what we had last year".

"Even local people have observed and commented on it," the Independent councillor remarked. "I would say between [Claremorris] and Ballyhaunis I have never seen the likes of it.”

He went on: “Someone has to be in charge of the tendering process and it has to be clear when the work will be done, day or night, because at night you won’t even see them doing it. They could be hidden behind a bollard and it is a hazard.”
