Criminals armed with a crowbar were chased from the scene of a supermarket break-in but still made off with a significant quantity of cigarettes.
O’Hara’s Centra on Main Street, Foxford, was targeted at around 4am this morning. The two culprits used a crowbar to break in through the front door.
Bernie O’Hara, proprietor of the store, told that her son Mark disturbed the burglars when the alarm sounded and CCTV revealed a break-in was occurring.
She said one of the burglars swung a crowbar at her son as he bravely attempted to thwart the crime. The men dropped one of the bags they were carrying as they fled the scene. However, they still made off with a large quantity of cigarettes.
The suspects were wearing balaclavas, black hooded tops, and gloves and sped away in a car.
Gardai attended the scene, and CCTV footage was examined.
A car was discovered crashed on its side and written off a short distance away at Station Road.
Gardai are working to establish if this is the same vehicle that was used by the raiders.
No arrests have been made yet, and searches of the local area are taking place today (Monday).
