Woman was abusive towards Garda

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.

A Ballina woman was verbally abusive towards a Garda who found her asleep on a busy roadway in the town, a court has heard.

Veronica Cowley, aged 39, of Moyvale Lawn, Quignalecka, Ballina pleaded guilty at the local district court to using threatening or abusive language.

The court heard that Gda Donal Meade came across Cowley asleep on the roadway at Clare Street, Ballina at 11.26pm on November 12 last. He was concerned for her wellbeing and attempted to rouse her, but she became abusive towards him. Sgt McShane added that Cowley was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Cowley has five previous convictions.

Solicitor Peter Loftus said his client accepts what occurred was out of order and that she has had issues with the abuse of alcohol.

Judge Sandra Murphy said Cowley had a “lot going on in the background” and ordered a probation report to assist with finalising the case. She adjourned the matter to Ballina District Court on March 24 for the completion of this report.
