Woman faces trial over alleged thefts of cash from patients at MUH

The thefts are alleged to have occurred at Mayo University Hospital.

A Ballycroy woman who is accused of stealing more than €3,000 from patients at Mayo University Hospital is expected to face trial at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court later this summer.

Helen Deane, aged 41, of Knockmoyleen, Ballycroy faces five counts of theft from patients at the hospital during 2025.

She is accused of stealing €1,220 in cash from a patient on April 14, and €289 from another patient on June 2. On July 8, she allegedly stole a handbag valued at €60 and €40 in cash.

She is further accused of stealing €250 from a patient in the hospital's emergency department on August 6, and between August 14 and 15 she allegedly stole a further €1,300 in cash.

When the case came before last Wednesday's sitting at Castlebar District Court, Garda Evan Joyce gave evidence that he had served Deane with the book of evidence prior to the court sitting.

State Solicitor for Mayo, Louise Cresham, said the Director of Public Prosecutions was seeking to have Deane returned for trial to Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court on June 29.

Judge Vincent Deane approved the application and granted free legal aid following the submission of a statement of means by defence solicitor Eanya Egan, with no State objection.

Ms Deane was remanded on continuing bail subject to her existing conditions.
