Sligo man breached Covid-19 lockdown rules to visit friends

The defendant pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court.

A Sligo man breached Covid-19 rules to travel to Mayo to meet friends.

Thomas Perry, aged 31, of Bunninadden, Ballymote, Co Sligo, pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared before a sitting of Castlebar District Court.

On March 21, 2021, Perry’s car was observed at Ballyvary. The vehicle was followed by Gardaí who stopped it and discovered the accused had breached the restrictions that were in place at the time, which forbade travel beyond 5km except for essential reasons. Perry has one previous conviction.

Solicitor Gary Mulchrone said his client made the foolish decision to travel to meet friends.

Judge Michael Connellan agreed to strike out the case on the condition that €200 is donated to Mayo Roscommon Hospice.
