Quad driver taught lesson ‘he will never forget’

A quad on its side after it has been accidentally flipped.
A man who was thrown from a quad bike was not insured to drive the vehicle on a public road.
Aaron Mullarkey, aged 21, of Glenhest, Newport, pleaded guilty to charges of no insurance and driving an unregistered vehicle before a sitting of Castlebar District Court.
On September 12, 2022, Mullarkey was driving the quad from his home when the accident occurred at Cloonagh. He was turning right as another vehicle was overtaking him. The quad bike had no indicator and the brake light was obscured by a trailer he was carrying. Mullarkey was struck and thrown from the quad. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered a head injury.
The accused mistakenly believed he had insurance to drive the quad, which belonged to his father, on a public road. The apprentice butcher has no previous convictions. Mullarkey has completed a Driver Safety Awareness Programme.
Solicitor Gary Mulchrone said his client has been taught a lesson ‘he will never forget’.
Judge Vincent Deane fined Mullarkey €400.
