Man assaulted attendees at Safe Pass course in Mayo town

The defendant pleaded guilty to the offence.

A Ukrainian man who interrupted a Safe Pass course in Crossmolina and assaulted two attendees has received a suspended prison sentence.

Viktor Domin, aged 30, with an address at Doebhy, Ferrew, Ballina, pleaded guilty at the local district court to a charge of assault.

Gda Chris Barrett told the court that on February 22, 2025, Gardaí received a report of an assault that had occurred at the Town Hall on Chapel Street in Crossmolina.

The complainants John Howley and Stuart Meakin told the Gardaí that they were attending a Safe Pass course when a man, later identified on CCTV as Domin, entered the room in an intoxicated state. The defendant became volatile and assaulted the men, punching Mr Meakin in the chest before also punching Mr Howley and biting him in his right forearm.

No victim impact statements were forthcoming.

The court was told that Domin has no previous convictions.

Solicitor Gary Mulchrone said his client, who had worked in construction, moved to Ireland three years ago from Ukraine “for a better life after the outbreak of war” in his native country. This incident occurred at a time when Domin’s wife moved back to a safer part of Ukraine and he had been “left to his own devices". Mr Mulchrone said Domin was embarrassed and sorry for what had occurred and has now moved away from the north Mayo area.

Judge Vincent Deane said this incident was at the “higher end” of common assault. He imposed a six-month prison term suspended for two years.
