‘If Guards said it, it must be true’
The defendant appeared before Castlebar District Court.
A Knock man with 61 previous convictions has been fined for causing a disturbance outside Claremorris Garda Station.
Michael Conroy, aged 35, Ard Mhuire, Main Street, Knock, pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court to breaches of the Public Order Act.
Gda Sgt John O’Reilly told the court that Conroy arrived at Claremorris Garda Station with his wife on October 21st, 2025. She was upset, excited and intoxicated, and the couple soon left the station. However, Conroy’s wife told him not to get into their car.
The defendant was “roaring and shouting” in the street in full view of a witness, the court heard. He was subsequently arrested and brought into the station.
Sgt O’Reilly said Conroy has 61 previous convictions, seven of them for intoxication in a public place.
Addressing the court, Conroy said: “If Guards said it, then it must be true.” He added: “I’ve changed. I don’t drink anymore.”
Judge Vincent Deane imposed a fine of €200 and gave Conroy six months to pay.
