Foul play ruled out in death of young man at Mayo property

The inquest was heard last Thursday at Ballina Courthouse.

A state pathologist was called by gardaí to conduct a post-mortem examination on a 30-year-old Slovakian national who died on a mattress on the floor of accommodation where he had been staying in Ballyhaunis.

The body of Renato Luptak, Devlis Cottages, Ballyhaunis, showed signs of bruising and abrasions but the state pathologist Dr Sally Ann Collis ruled out foul play following an extensive autopsy.

In a written statement to an inquest at Ballina Courthouse last week, Dr Collis said she concluded the cause of death was acute alcohol and mixed drug intoxication with complications of blunt force face/head injury.

Foul play was initially suspected after Mr Luptak who was found dead on October 28, 2023. The deceased, who had worked previously in Dawn Meats and Western Brand Chickens, had a history of sustained alcohol intoxication.

On the day he died, his blood alcohol reading was four times the legal driving limit.

Evidence was given to the inquest that before he died he had been drinking heavily a mixture of vodka, whiskey and beer with three friends. All three were intoxicated when gardaí investigated and empty bottles and cans were strewn about the property.

Returning a verdict of death from unnatural causes, coroner Dr Eleanor Fitzgerald noted there wasn’t sufficient evidence to suggest foul play.
