Assault charges against three Castlebar men are upgraded

The men appeared before Castlebar District Court.

Three men accused of injuring another male during a late-night incident in Castlebar have had the charges against them upgraded to assault causing serious harm.

The charges arise out of an incident in the early hours of August 23, 2025, when gardaí found a man unconscious after an alleged assault outside a licensed premises on Tucker Street in the county town. The man in his 20s was removed from the scene and taken to Mayo University Hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

Four males were arrested and charged and previously appeared before Castlebar District Court in May.

Three of the accused have had the charges against them upgraded.

Davitt Neary, aged 23, of Shanvalley, Breaffy Woods, Castlebar, Rhys Neary, aged 18, of Shanvalley, Breaffy Woods, Castlebar, and Paul Dowding, aged 24, of Frenchhill, Castlebar were originally charged with assault causing harm and violent disorder.

At a sitting of Castlebar District Court today, the assault causing harm charge was withdrawn against all three and upgraded to the more serious offence of assault causing serious harm.

A fourth male, Oran Groarke, aged 23, of Ballynew, Turlough Road, Castlebar was charged with violent disorder and that remains unchanged.

All four men have been remanded on continuing bail until July 15 for the service of a book of evidence.
