Councillor highlights road safety issues near local school

A local councillor has said overgrown hedges are causing safety issues near the school in Knockmore.

Independent Cllr Joe Faughnan said a few roads within the Knockmore area had hedges that had grown ‘out of control’ and said these were causing safety issues for children walking to the national school and motorists.

He asked that Mayo County Council take action to remedy the situation during the hedge-cutting season that began at the start of September and runs until the end of February 2025.

In response, area engineer Orla Bourke said that it is the landowners responsibility to ensure that their hedges are cut.

She said the council cut and covered a number of hedges as part of their outdoor works but these are strictly on certain strategic routes.

Ms Bourke said it was important the message be sent out to landowners once again that their own hedges are their own responsibility.
