A local councillor has praised workers from Mayo Co Council for getting the village of Kilkelly back on its feet after just over a week following the collapse of a building.
Three adults and two children had a miraculous escape when the Duffy’s Pub building gave way at about 8.45am on Tuesday, October 31. Fortunately, nobody was on the street at the time, and the five people inside the building escaped with minor injuries.
An investigation is ongoing into the incident with several factors being assessed, including work on a neighbouring site where the building had been demolished.
Fianna Fáil Cllr John Caulfield confirmed at last week’s meeting of the Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District that traffic re-opened to one lane on Main Street.
“While thankfully there was no loss of life, a lot of livelihoods were affected. However, I’d like to thank staff from Mayo County Council for their Trojan work in ensuring that Main Street in Kilkelly re-opened after just over a week,” Cllr Caulfield said. “If it wasn’t for the council, it would have been much longer.”
