Council planners in Mayo shoot down fireworks storage proposal

The decision to grant approval has been appealed to an Bord Pleanála

An appeal has been made to An Bord Pleanala over Mayo County Council’s refusal to grant planning permission for the installation of a shipping container underground to store fireworks.

The Council refused planning permission to Rocket Pyrotechnics last month for the installation of a shipping container underground for the storage of pyrotechnics and all associated site works at Rathoma, Killala.

The applicant wished to install a 40f foot metal shipping container with 3.2m high earth mounding for the safe and secure storage of pyrotechnics along with a timber shed for the packing and unpacking of the pyrotechnics.

Rocket Pyrotechnics wanted to construct the storage facility as they import their pyrotechnics from Britain and Brexit is significantly impacting their supply chain. This facility will provide them with a safe and secure storage facility to store and retrieve their pyrotechnics without interruption to the company’s supply. The owner is a native of the area.

Council planners considered the proposed development would not be in accordance with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area and refused planning permission.

An appeal has been made to An Bord Pleanala regarding this decision. The case is due to be decided by January 23, 2025.
