Council gives reasons for not taking charge of two Ballina housing estates

Ballina Municipal District Council has given an update on plans to take charge of two estates within the town.

Cllr Annie May Reape put forward a notice of motion at last week's municipal district meeting calling for the council to take charge of Knocknalyre Estate and Weir Court.

“Both estates are built now for a number of years and are no further on,” said Cllr Reape.

In a written reply, area executive engineer Muiriosa Mellett said Weir Court would not be taken in charge because it is a development made up of apartments and not a housing estate with roads and services to be managed by the local authority.

Ms Mellett added that there are still outstanding works to be carried out by the developer of Knocknalyre after several issues were identified in an assessment carried out in 2023, including CCTV for Uisce Éireann. However, no outstanding works have been completed to date.

“Mayo County Council will follow up with the developer regarding outstanding works,” she concluded.
