Music lovers were treated to a spectacular evening of classical piano recently at the Great National Hotel in Ballina, where internationally acclaimed Irish pianist John O’Conor delivered a mesmerising performance to a packed house.

O’Conor, known around the world for his masterful interpretations and commanding presence, delighted the audience with a programme of timeless works by Haydn, Beethoven, Debussy, and Chopin. His artistry was matched by his warm and engaging personality, as he shared fascinating stories and insights into the pieces he performed, adding an enriching layer to an already unforgettable night.

The concert, organised by Ballina Lions Club in conjunction with Ballina Parish, was held in support of ongoing restoration works at St Muredach’s Cathedral. Thanks to the generosity of those in attendance, €10,050 was raised for the cause.

Fr Aidan O’Boyle, of St Muredach’s Cathedral, expressed heartfelt thanks to all who supported the event, with special gratitude extended to Ballina Lions Club for their invaluable assistance in making the evening such a success.

Restoration efforts on the cathedral’s stained-glass windows are well underway and are expected to be completed by the end of August. These works mark just one phase of a broader project to prepare the cathedral - Ballina’s most iconic building - for its bicentenary celebrations in 2027.

St Muredach’s Cathedral stands as a symbol of the town’s heritage and spiritual heart, and its restoration is a matter of community pride. Those wishing to contribute to the ongoing works can do so by contacting the parish office at 096-70555 or by visiting www.ballinaparish.org and clicking on the 'Donate' tab.

The night was not only a triumph of music but also a testament to Ballina’s spirit of community and commitment to preserving its rich cultural history.
