Civic reception to be held for Ballina volunteer group

Last year's Ballina Arch Club Christmas Party, a highlight of their calendar for members and volunteers alike.

A civic reception has been proposed for the Ballina Arch Club to celebrate the group's 40th anniversary.

A motion put forward by Cllr John O’Hara at the October meeting of Ballina Municipal District recognised the work of volunteers who have spent the past four decades providing a social outlet for adults with additional needs.

Founded in March 1986 by members of the local community, the Ballina Arch Club meets every second Wednesday night, bringing members out for dancing, bowling and a range of other activities. He praised the volunteers for their work, from fundraising to organising every aspect of the Wednesday night outings, adding “and they’ve been doing it for 40 years”.

“They deserve a civic reception for their work; they make the calls, find the places, everything is done by this organisation. They are so good to people who need 24/7 care, they are entitled to a civic reception."

Cllr O’Hara asked for the reception to be held before Christmas, so that it coincides with the group's 40th anniversary year.

The motion was seconded by Cllr Joe Faughnan and unanimously agreed by all councillors with Cathaoirelach Annie May Reape confirming that a time and date will be arranged.
