'Chaos' as circus rolls into Mayo town

A local councillor said there were chaotic parking scenes at an unsuitable circus location.

A Castlebar councillor said there was “chaos” when a circus rolled into the county town recently.

Cllr Ger Deere said he witnessed chaotic parking scenes at the site on the Milebush Road.

“There was utter chaos over the weekend when cars parked on the footpath and double parked along the road impeding traffic, pedestians, and motorists alike. It was a serious safety issue. We cannot ever let this happen again and a safer more suitable site needs to be found to accommodate these events coming to town.

“We all want them to take place, it’s a tradition we all grew up with and we want future generations to enjoy in a safe environment,” said the Fine Gael councillor.

Cllr Deere previously highlighted issues with the site at a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.

“I didn’t think we’d be revisiting this again. We have highlighted it so many times and I know they are exempt from planning but they are having a circus out on the Milebush Road on the most unsuitable site ever in a town,” he told the meeting.

Following the meeting, Cllr Deere said residents were left upset by the move to go ahead with it.

“It’s a crying shame that we have come to this situation again. The residents are not happy and I don’t blame them,” said Cllr Deere.
