Changes proposed to contentious speed limit in Mayo village

The speed limits in Breaffy are to be amended in advance of an Active Travel project
Mayo County Council is hoping to have a tender out by the end of next year for the proposed N60 Breaffy Active Travel scheme.
Councillors from the Castlebar Municipal District considered a report at their meeting last week on amending the speed limit along the 4.2km stretch of road where the works are to be carried out.
It was recommended that an 80km/hr speed zone be introduced at the end of the 60km/hr zone in the townland of Drumaleheen on the eastern side of the N5 junction, going as far as the east side of Breaffy village. This would replace the existing 100km/hr limit currently in place at this location.
In addition, a periodic special speed limit is also to be in place during the school year to be in effect during school pickup and dropoff times in the area close to Breaffy Primary School.
An official from the council's Roads Office told councillors that amending the speed limit in advance of the Active Travel project will be advantageous to the progress of the project once a contractor is appointed.
The council is currently engaging with landowners in the area and is hoping to be in a position to put the works out to tender by the end of 2024.
Cllr Cyril Burke welcomed the amendment and said the Active Travel plan is a great proposal for Breaffy.
