Cemetery needs urgent financial support

Councillors in Ballina have called for the future upkeep of Leigue Cemetery to be urgently placed on the agenda for their next municipal district meeting due to financial concerns facing the Ballina graveyard, writes Paul O'Malley.

Cllr Michael Loftus said at last week’s district meeting that Friends of Leigue Cemetery Committee, which is charged with maintaining the large burial ground off the Killala Road, are seeking an increase in their funding.

Head of the district Declan Turnbull said Mayo Co Council makes an allocation of around €40,000 towards Leigue Cemetery annually but Cllr Loftus said this was not enough to meet the current needs, adding:

“We need it on the agenda for the next meeting because of the financial situation. They need more funding and are looking for almost double their current allocation."

Leigue is one of the largest graveyards in the county with an estimated 3,000 gravestones there.
