Castlebar Tidy Towns launch competitions

Castlebar Tidy Towns has launched a local competition ahead of the summer judging season.

To prepare for the upcoming visit by the National Tidy Towns judges to Castlebar in June and July, Castlebar Tidy Towns is launching a competition.

They are asking residents’ associations, businesses, shops, schools, and other community groups to engage in a range of environmental initiatives and programmes during this period.

The committee is looking for excellence in the presentation and upkeep of estates.

"We want to see how well communal green spaces are maintained, along with the condition of estate signage. Additionally, attention will be given to the maintenance of boundary walls, fences, and gardens, as well as weed control along kerbs.

Bonus points will be granted for projects aligned with sustainable development goals, awareness programmes, sustainability efforts, and climate action initiatives.

Schools will be commended on the presentation of grounds and environs.

Litter picking and environmental initiatives will also be judged as part of the competition.

Competition judges will look at 'Green Schools' programme participation; what upgrade or refurbishment has the school undertaken in the past 12 months to make it more presentable; any floral displays that are visible in the grounds and and any interaction with nature projects.

Local businesses can enter and show off the presentation of their premises, including floral displays; shop fronts and signage; and general maintenance.

Competition judges are also interested in in-house awareness programmes with staff on the need to reduce waste; segregation of litter; reduction of paper usage, car-pooling, climate action etc.

There will be prizes for first, second, and third, across each category group. Awards will be presented at a special Tidy Towns 30th-anniversary ceremony in November.

To take part, simply complete the entry form and return to Casltebar Tidy Towns by June 30. Entrants can provide additional information to supplement the application form, and the use of before and after photographs are recommended in all cases.
