Belmullet Fianna Fáil councillor Sean Carey believes his strong track record of delivering for his local area will aid him in his bid for re-election.

Cllr Carey will be battling it out for one of three seats in the hotly contested constituency.

“It will be a tough election. All elections are tough,” Cllr Carey told the Western People.

He said he is proud of what he has managed to achieve since being elected in 2020.

“I am delighted with what I have been able to achieve in the locality and I’m getting that on the doors when I’m canvassing. People recognise the work you have done and appreciate it. A lot of projects have been carried out,” said Cllr Carey, citing examples such as the Bundowla sea wall and improvement works at Belmullet tidal pool.

He is pleased to see the approval of the Glencastle Road realignment project.

“That’s a dangerous bend and we have secured funding for the planning stage. It is hoped that works will start there later this year."

Cllr Carey pushed hard for Belmullet to play host to Mayo Day in 2024 with the event a major success.

“That was fought hard for and it was a great success with so many people attending. It was a really great day and so many people enjoyed it from all over the county and beyond. It was the talk of the place,” he stated.

He said he was immensely proud to be Cathaoirleach of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, not only for Mayo Day but also the Belmullet 200 celebrations.

“It’s been an honour and a privilege and I was delighted to be able to serve the entire municipal district as well as my local area,” said Cllr Carey.

He said roads and housing are some of the recurring themes on the canvas and this is not lost on him.

“We will be fighting for more funding for local and regional roads."

He said he would be pushing for more housing projects for the area.

“The demand is there and we need the supply. It’s important to keep people in their local area and the villages alive,” he added.

Proud of his farming background, Cllr Carey pledges to be a voice for the farming and fishing community in his area.

“The local fisherman are looking for an increase in their mackerel quota which is badly needed. It’s really important that we get that increase and I’m working with Minister Calleary on that.

“I was raised on a farm and have been farming all my life. I’m very aware of the issues impacting the farming community in my area,” he added.
