Calls to 'fulfil vision' of late great Ballina volunteer

The late Jim Friel

A local councillor has suggested constructing a water feature at a scenic Ballina field to ‘fulfil the vision’ of a pivotal member of the local Tidy Towns who passed away recently.

Jim Friel of Shanaghy, Ballina passed away in May of this year and was known as a stalwart member of Ballina Tidy Towns, serving in a number of different roles including as chairperson. He also worked as a Garda Sergeant.

A major project Jim contributed to for the Tidy Towns was a massive overhaul of ‘Bishops Field’, located on the Sligo Road opposite St Muredach’s Cathedral. Jim told the Western People at the time that thanks to the efforts of Tidy Towns volunteers, the space was transformed from a wilderness of nettles of briars to a picturesque green space complete with flower beds.

“We started piece by piece planting in our flower beds. Four of them are shaped like boats as we’re right next to the Moy and they were designed by people on a local CE scheme. There is also a centre piece,” explained Jim at the time.

“We have different types of roses and flowers as well as a row of gabion baskets. The work speaks for itself and it has certainly added a lot of colour to this side of the town.”

At yesterday's meeting of the Ballina Municipal District, Cllr Mark Duffy offered a vote of sympathy to Jim Friel and said the MD should help bring to fruition further plans Jim had for Bishops Field.

“Jim was an incredible leader in our community, so diligent and professional and dedicated to the job.”

“He had plans for a water feature at Bishops Field. If we have the funds available, we should look to fulfil Jim’s vision. It would be a fitting tribute.”

Cllr Annie May Reape said that two days before he passed away, Jim Friel was still working on behalf of Tidy Towns.

“He was a great friend to Ballina. He was on the phone regarding work for the Tidy Towns just two days before he passed away, he had such commitment and passion for the work.”

Cllr Michael Loftus also offered sympathies to the family of Jim Friel.

“Jim was a Sergeant in Lahardane and their loss was Ballina’s gain when he moved here. He was a good man and so well respected as a Garda,” he said.
