A Westport councillor has called on Mayo County Council to prioritise the development of a marina at Westport Quay, writes Joan Geraghty.

The ambitious project has been years in the offing with no actual work done to date.

Cllr Brendan Mulroy told members of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District at their recent meeting that a strong case was now being made in Sligo for the development of a marina "with surveys and water quality tests and all manner of relevant data being compiled to further the project". However, no progress was being made on the proposed marina for Westport, despite the work of a dedicated taskforce that has engaged with the council on numerous occasions in a bid to get the project off the ground.

Cllr Mulroy told management that it was clear the Westport marina was not a priority and he wanted it to be made a priority, adding:

“Funding for the Sligo marina at Rosses Point came out of the Department of Rural Development, which is Minister Dara Calleary’s department, so I ask that we apply for that funding also. The Rural Regeneration Development Fund would be a great breakthrough for the Westport marina also. I ask management to look into this and put it on the agenda of the next meeting for an update to be provided.”
