Calls for measures to address 'scary speeding' on Ballina street

A local councillor has called for speed ramps to be installed on a Ballina street to prevent speeding at the location.

Cllr Annie May Reape said she had been recently contacted by the family of a young man who had been killed in a road traffic accident on Lord Edward Street and wanted to see speed mitigation measures installed along the street.

“The speed of traffic on Lord Edward Street is scary. We would like to see speed ramps put in there that might prevent another tragedy,” she said.

Her comments were supported by Cllr John O'Hara who said a speed ramp would be the only solution to the speed on the street.

Area engineer Orla Bourke said they had received a number of comments about the speed of traffic on Lord Edward Street. The level of resistance to the installation of speed ramps is not as high as it has been in recent years, she added.

“We will take a look at it. There is no longer a complete resistance to speed ramps. Active Travel has put the focus on people first, rather than traffic,” she said.
