Calleary issues update on long-awaited Ballina project

Plans to redevelop Ballina District Hospital are expected to progress early in 2024.

Long-awaited redevelopment works at Ballina District Hospital are expected to get underway early this year.

Minister of State Dara Calleary confirmed that the HSE intends to progress Phase 1 of the planned works in early 2024. The project has been the subject of much public discussion over recent years.

Officials from the HSE recently visited the facility on the Crossmolina Road and Minister Calleary was later informed of the development plans.

“I have been informed that it is the HSE’s intention to advance Phase 1 of the redevelopment of Ballina District Hospital to design stage in early 2024,” he said.

The works involve the development of a new state-of-the-art 75-bed facility over three storeys. Currently, the hospital contains 62 beds and provides step-down facilities for patients discharged from Mayo University Hospital.

The project team will meet again later this month to finalise and approve the plan and more definite timelines are expected to become available after that meeting.

“I wish to acknowledge the enormous contribution of the Director of Nursing Fidelma Gallagher and her staff in providing first-class care at the existing facility," said Minister Calleary. "I want to assure them and the public that the redevelopment project is a priority as we move into 2024."
