Call to review electoral register in Mayo ahead of Presidential election
A local councillor has called on the Government to provide extra funding to local authorities so they can ensure the register of electors is up to date and correct ahead of the this year's Presidential elections.
Cllr Richard Finn made his comments at yesterday's meeting of the Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District.
Mayo County Council was among 11 local authorities nationwide to have more people on their electoral register than the population that is eligible to vote in findings published by An Coimisiún Toghcháin earlier this year.
Cllr Fin said it was important to address this ahead of the Presidential elections later this year.
“It has never been more important. We have to ensure elections are ran correctly and fairly,” he said.
“PPS numbers and addresses should be exact and the correct people should be voting.”
“I will be calling on the Government to provide extra funding to local authorities so council staff have funding to do that,” he said.
“It is important that is tackled for the future of our democracy.”
