Call for security measures at Ballina Innovation Quarter after vandalism

The Innovation Quarter is in danger of 'becoming a ghetto,' a councillor has claimed.

The area surrounding Ballina’s new Innovation Quarter (IQ) is in danger of becoming a "ghetto", it has been claimed.

Cllr John O’Hara told a meeting of Mayo County Council that graffiti has been daubed on a wall at the new IQ campus in Market Square.

Noting that the open plaza area has become a breeding ground for anti-social behaviour, he called on the council to install a gate at night and put security in place.

“It’s going to be a ghetto," he added.

Cllr Mark Duffy said the innovation hub needs tenants as soon as possible. It had been hoped that the first set of tenants would move into the centre by early April.
