The overcrowding situation at the Castlebar hospital and in the west has become considerably worse during the past six days.

On Thursday, January 18 there were just seven patients without a bed at MUH and 91 people in total on trolleys and chairs across the four hospitals in the province.

There is a total of 129 patients in the four hospitals in the west today, which equates to a jump of nearly 30%.

Meanwhile, across the country there are 654 admitted patients waiting for beds, with 446 people in the emergency department and 208 elsewhere in the hospitals.

Colm Porter from the INMO has insisted not enough is being done by the HSE and the Government to address the crisis and the figures should be a 'wake-up call' to take the necessary action.
