The Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI), the independent statutory body responsible for the regulation of the practice of veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing in the public interest and in the interests of animal health and welfare, has appointed Ballina veterinary practitioner Rachel Brown as their new president.

Rachel was appointed following an uncontested election by Veterinary Council members at the most recent VCI meeting which took place on 25 January 2024. She assumes the office of President with immediate effect.

Rachel is a Veterinary Practitioner in Moy Veterinary Clinic, a mixed practice serving companion animal and farm animals based in Ballina. She has served as Deputy President of the VCI for the last two years.

Speaking about her appointment as President of the VCI, Rachel Brown said: “It is an immense privilege to have been elected as President of the Veterinary Council of Ireland. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues on the Council, along with the Registrar and executive team in the interest of the public and of animal health and welfare.”

Niamh Muldoon, CEO and Registrar of the VCI said: “I warmly congratulate our new President on her incoming term of office and I look forward to working with her to continue the work of the Veterinary Council on matters of animal health and welfare and public health. The Council will benefit from Rachel’s expertise having gained experience as Deputy President.

“I would also like to recognise and sincerely thank our outgoing President, Vivienne Duggan, for her high level of commitment and dedication in the performance of her role over the preceding two years.”
