The Ballina branch of Soroptimist International hosted an Orange Café event last week as part of its contribution to the Orange the World campaign, a movement which aims to raise awareness and combat violence against women and girls.

Soroptimist International Ballina is one of the 15 Soroptimist clubs around Ireland participating in a series of events from November 25 to December 10.

The Soroptimist organisation’s support aligns with the United Nations' 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence programme.

The Orange the World campaign, part of the UN Secretary-General's UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women initiative, uses the colour orange to symbolise a brighter future free from violence. This annual campaign calls for global action to increase awareness, galvanise advocacy efforts and share knowledge and innovations.

Events across Ireland include activities such as educational workshops, speaker events and community outreach programmes designed to empower women and girls, educate the public and foster community engagement.

The Ballina Soroptimist group launched its campaign with an Orange Café held in Mam’s Café of Cathedral Road on Tuesday last, November 25, and the members of the club have expressed their thanks to Jean Hanafin and staff for hosting them.

Minister of State Dara Calleary showed his support for the initiative by attending and donning an orange vest.

Anne O'Sullivan, National President of Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland, emphasised the importance of collective action:

"Violence against women and girls is a pervasive issue that requires a unified response. Through the Orange the World campaign, we aim to shine a light on this critical issue and mobilise communities across Ireland to take a stand."

Members of the community are invited to participate in the campaign's events and join the movement to end violence against women and girls.
