Ballina Quay redevelopment is 'chicken and egg' situation

Mayo County Council are awaiting a government funding call before progressing with plans to develop the quay area around the Glasgow-Kennedy Centre in Ballina.
Cllr Mark Duffy called for an update in relation to the proposed Quay development works in Ballina at last week’s meeting of the Ballina Municipal District.
MD Architect Robbie Maguire said feasibility studies have been carried out including consultation with local councillors and key stakeholders in the Quay area of town.
He added they are awaiting a call for funding under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) and will be able to progress a brief once they are aware of the requirements of this round of URDF funding.
Cllr Duffy said it would be great to get more clarity around the requirements of the anticipated URDF call.
“It is kind of chicken and egg at the moment. Funds coming out all of a sudden with certain parameters from the Department. It should be the other way around, we should set out what we’d like to see and achieve for Ballina and the Quay area,” he said.
