€17 million in capital funding has been provided by the Department for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation to respond to the growing demand for apprenticeships in the higher education sector, which includes funding to ATU Mayo in Castlebar.

This additional capacity is required to meet the increase in apprentice registrations, as indicated by SOLAS, in a number of trades.

The funding includes additional Electrical Apprenticeship Capacity in ATU Mayo in the form of 12 blocks, which is essentially 12 new classes to expand capacity and meet demand.

Fine Gael TD Michael Ring welcomed today’s announcement.

“There is a growing demand for learning through apprenticeship and I am delighted that funding is being allocated to ATU Mayo so that this demand can be met locally in Castlebar,” Deputy Ring said. “The opportunities for employment in trades such as electrical, plumbing, metal fabrication, refrigeration, pipefitting and electronic security systems are immense. These are areas of skills that are vital to our economy and to our housing targets.

“I would urge people to consider the apprenticeship route of education as an good option for a career. I look forward to seeing additional apprentices being trained at ATU Mayo in Castlebar.”
