€1m project for Mayo town 'needs to be delivered next year'
Cllr Peter Flynn
A Westport councillor has warmly welcomed the news that €1m has been secured for traffic calming works and lighting on the Lodge Road in the town.
Cllr Peter Flynn told the June meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District that the project "needs to be delivered by next year" so that more houses can be developed in the area.
"Planning applications are coming in and existing residents are taking their lives in their hands with all the commercial traffic down there.”
He added: “We don’t want an Active Travel timescale for these works. A Mayo County Council timescale of 12 months is enough to develop this simple piece of infrastructure. This is about opening affordable homes for people there.”
Cllr Flynn called for a council management update on the project to be delivered at the September meeting of the forum and this was supported by members, with Cllr John O’Malley agreeing that pedestrians and also motorists face daily dangers on the road due to the lack of segregated zones.
