Pat Kinevane has a gift of bringing fascinating, moving, and very funny stories to the stage. His latest production,
, arrives at Ballina Arts Centre on Friday, November 29th, and tells the story of Luther, a man from Cork, who only leaves his apartment for essential journeys... and to perform as an Elvis impersonator.Luther was named in honour of his Granny Bee Baw’s hero, Dr Martin Luther King Jr. His home is his sanctuary, but shadows of a troubled past linger, occasionally surfacing through vivid flashbacks.
There are hints at a haunting history in ‘The Ward’, and fear of an impending future without his father. Dance and song are cathartic outlets for Luther, showcasing Kinevane’s powerhouse voice when he transforms into a charismatic Elvis impersonator.
invites the audience into a world where Argentine tango intertwines with Luther’s poignant tale combining captivating narratives of family and friends with movements that create a dance of memories and emotion. Luther’s world is illuminated through dynamic lighting and dreamlike sequences, creating a riveting and striking atmosphere and throughout is the recurring mantra “Today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday, and everything is well’’ in Pat’s resonant Cork accent.
This production is the fifth collaboration between Pat Kinevane and Fishamble, with Jim Culleton as director. Previous collaborations
and have won major international awards including Olivier, Fringe First, Herald Archangel, Adelaide Fringe, and Helen Hayes awards., with music by Denis Clohessy, was developed with the support of Nasc Network Commission and Georganne Aldrich Heller.
