Maguire wins Spanish Open

Champion blind golfer Eddie Maguire has added another Open title to his CV when he won the ISPS Handa Spanish Golf Open for blind and visually impaired golfers at the Costa Ballena GC just outside Cadiz.

The Blacksod native had rounds of 72 and 73 nett over the two championship days and in the process became the first Irish person to win a Spanish Open in recent years.

24 players from all over the world teed it on the 6,500 yard course. Golfers from the USA, England, Sweden, Canada, The Netherlands, Spain, Argentina, Austria and other countries ensured it was a hectic battle, but he managed to exorcise the "Mayo curse" and win the title.

Results: 1st, Ed Maguire (Ireland); 2nd, Magnus Grimberg (Sweden); 3rd, Lutz Friess (Germany).

Marcus Grimberg was also in the shake up when Eddie won the Scandinavian Open before Christmas.

Next on the international agenda will be The Handa British Open at the Belton Woods GC, outside Grantham GC in Lincolnshire in July.
