Tullaghan Bay Rowing Club

Tullaghan Bay Rowing Club was in Limerick at the National Indoor Championships recently and the club continues to go from strength to strength winning ten gold, two silver and four bronze. Well done to those who rowed to success and congratulations to all the winners. The effort has been put in by club, committee, sponsors, and parents and supporters and of course the competitors. There was gold for Jack Barrett, Joshua Cosgrove, Grace Munnelly and Sarah Carolan. All Ireland Champions - Junior Mixed. The girls also retained their title and remain All Ireland Champions. Gold for Saoirse Donoughue, Alex Calpin, Katie Turner and Aleesha Calpin. Congratulations to Emma Gaughan with a bronze at 500 metres and Jack Barrett with silver this time at 500m. Senior medals are coming as fast as they are rowing.

There was silver for Stephen Gaughan at 2000m, gold for Donal Murphy lightweight men’s and gold (and a new personal best) for Emma Gaughan at 2k lightweight women’s. There was bronze for Stacey Sheridan plus silver medal for Kathleen Doocey. Martin Gaughan also won bronze at 1000m.

The months of work for a start and early starts at that. Add in a club culture developing with its members, where everyone steps up or steps in and everyone celebrates each other’s success. And when you fail, you learn and you get back up again because you know your clubmates and coaches have your back.

A lot is said about a club when you can take a bus full of teenagers away and not a single issue.

Chris McManus MEP visits IWA

Chris McManus MEP along with Sinn Féin local election candidate for the Belmullet LEA Rosaleen Lally paid a visit to Erris recently to visit two community groups in the area. Chris first met with the members and staff from the Irish Wheelchair Association Belmullet and heard about the vital services the group deliver on a national and local level for people with disabilities and the elderly. The Belmullet centre and independent living houses provide a range of services in the Erris area. The IWA Erris Access Group informed Chris of their work locally on access issues that impact on their daily lives and how working with various community groups locally they have brought these issues to the fore and are actively lobbying for improvements to parking, footpaths, and housing in the area.

Chris also met with the Erris Family and Community Support Service, where co-ordinator Leanne Barrett and board members outlined the range of services this new and vital service has to offer in Erris. It was a great opportunity to hear the issues that affect the Erris community and how the Sinn Féin team of Councillors, TDs and MEPs can support these groups on a local, national and European level. Chris outlined his priority in Europe is to address the huge regional imbalance of funding in rural Ireland.

Ballyglass RNLI rescues sailor off Mayo coast

Ballyglass RNLI came to the aid of a lone sailor recently after their yacht got into difficulty in the North Atlantic Sea. The all-weather lifeboat was requested to launch by Malin Head Coast Guard to assist a sailor on a 9m yacht which had sustained rigging damage five miles off the north Mayo coast.

The volunteer crew received the alert at 5.25pm and the lifeboat was underway shortly after making its way to the sailor and their vessel some 17 nautical miles north-east of Ballyglass and five miles north of the Céide fields in Mayo.

When the Ballyglass lifeboat, with five crew on-board, arrived on scene a 60m fish carrier was standing off providing shelter for the casualty vessel. Their crew along with the Sligo based Irish Coast Guard helicopter crew from Rescue 118, provided illumination of the scene. Having assessed the situation, and observing that the sailor was safe and well, a decision was made to establish a tow line with the illumination assisting the lifeboat crew in setting up the tow with the vessel.

The lifeboat proceeded to tow the yacht to the nearest safe port at Ballyglass Pier. Approximately three miles from Ballyglass Pier the tow parted from the yacht’s end but was soon safely re-established and the lifeboat and yacht continued to their destination. There, the lifeboat crew were met by Ballyglass Coast Guard Unit who assisted in securing the casualty alongside.

Speaking following the call out, Ballyglass RNLI Coxswain James Mangan said: ‘We were pleased with the safe return of all and we would like to wish the sailor well and commend and thank our colleagues from Rescue 118 and Ballyglass Coast Guard Unit and the crew of the fish carrier for their assistance.’ Crew on this call out included Coxswain James Mangan, mechanic Allen Murray, navigator Matthew Togher and crew members Paudge Kelleher and Stephen Togher.

Belmullet families, the Ellicott

If you are over a certain age then you will remember Ellicott’s in Barrack St, a bowl of ice cream on a Fair Day for those of us who came in from the ‘country’, I have never tasted anything as good as that bowl of ice cream since, the genuine Wurlitzer Jukebox and the general décor was like something out of Grease The Movie. Belmullet probably had their own Danny and Sandy??

The first Ellicott in Belmullet was William. He was a Stonemason so he probably was brought here; he was from Lissatava, Hollymount and was the son of John Ellicott and Elizabeth Knox. William married Margaret Sweeney on September 29, 1884; Margaret Sweeney was the daughter of Pat, a car maker and Mary?; William Ellicott and Margaret Sweeney had the following children - John 1886, Anne Marie 1888 – 1991, single buried in Emlybeg, Patrick 1889, William 1891, Thomas 1894, James 1896, Charles 1899, Margaret (Agnes) 1900 – 1959, married Patrick McMahon 1926 in Westport, they are buried in Carne Old Graveyard. Patrick was killed along with fifteen other soldiers in the Glen on Imaal Tragedy in 1941.

1901 and 1911 Ellicott family were living in Davis St (American St). William Ellicott died 1932, Margaret (Sweeney) Ellicott died after 1932, Charlie Ellicott born 1899 was the man who had the shop in Barrack St, in the general location of The Chinese Restaurant today. Charlie Ellicott married Annie Deane on September 20, 1930, and they had a family but none of them stayed in Belmullet. Charlie Ellicott died in January 1980; Annie (Deane) Ellicott died May 1980, they are buried in Emlybeg Graveyard.

Deane family; Annie Deane Ellicott was the daughter of James Deane and Kate Lally; James Deane was a shoemaker living on his own in Barrack St 1901; James Deane was the son of John Deane; Katherine Lally was from Derrynameel, the daughter of Martin; James Deane and Katherine Lally married 1902, their children were Bridget 1902, Mary Kate 1903 -1979, Annie married Charlie Ellicott, Patrick 1906 – 1951, emigrated to the U.S.A 1926, James Deane died 1908, age 32. Kate remarried Martin Cuff, they had a son John born 1912 who joined the Priesthood and was known as Fr Jack.
