Students from Owenbeg NS, Easkey, had an amazing hands-on experience, cooking with fresh produce from their school garden. Ms Gibson's class harvested potatoes, carrots, onions and kale and the senior room used these to made a delicious Farmhouse Vegetable Soup while the Junior Room (pictured) learned how to measure, mix and bake their own soda bread.

1st Schools Surfing Championships to be held in Easkey

The Irish Surfing Association has announced the first ever Schools Surfing Championships, a nationwide surfing contest designed exclusively for secondary level students, will take place from October 26-28 in Easkey, one of Ireland’s premier surfing destinations. This landmark event marks a significant milestone in the development of youth surfing in Ireland, providing young surfers with an exciting platform to showcase their skills, represent their schools, and compete at a national level.

This initiative is part of Irish Surfings’ broader commitment to nurturing the next generation of Irish surfers and fostering a strong, inclusive surfing community. The competition will see points awarded to both individuals and teams competing, with categories for Junior Cert (GCSE) and Leaving Cert (A-level) students.

Prizes will be awarded in each category, and a Schools Surfing Championship Trophy for the overall top school. Schools are invited to register their teams and individual surfers by October 23 and registration details and further information about the event can be found on the official Irish Surfing website at www.irishsurfing.ie/events.

Ladies heading to New York

Enniscrone Kilglass Gaelic4Mothers&Others have been chosen along with 40 other G4M&O teams to take part in the New York ladies G4M&O Festival of Football that is taking place on October 12. There are 22 ladies travelling to New York and they are the only representatives from Sligo, so they will not only be flying the black and amber of Enniscrone Kilglass but the black and white of Sligo. It is another a huge milestone for the club.

The late Alanna O’Regan

The death took place of Alanna O’Regan nee Craddock, Seasons Lodge, Enniscrone, and formerly of The Den, Old Connaught, Bray, Co Dublin, on September 13, suddenly at her daughters residence in Dublin. Alanna is predeceased by her son Conor and her parents Evelyn and William Craddock, Dublin.

Alanna was the beloved wife of Dermot and loving mother of Lani. She will be sadly missed by Dermot and Lani, her brothers Charlie and Peter (Malahide), brother-in-law Jim, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Alanna reposed at her residence on Thursday evening, September 19, from 5 until 8pm and her funeral arrived to the Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, Enniscrone, on Friday for Requiem Mass at 12 noon, followed by private cremation on Saturday. May she rest in peace.

The late Frank Rouse

The death took place of Frank Rouse, The Strand, Castlecove, Enniscrone, peacefully at Mayo University Hospital, on September 15. Frank was predeceased by his adored wife of 65 years Beryl. He was the beloved father and will be sadly missed by his daughters; Heather, Frances, Linda, Jennifer and son Patrick; his brothers Tony (Sligo) and Sylvie; sister Tess (USA), daughter-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, neighbours, friends and lastly his adored dogs Candy and Bella.

Frank reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Wednesday from 4.30pm with removal at 6pm to The Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, Enniscrone. Requiem Mass was held on Thursday morning at 11am followed by private cremation.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.

Go along to the West Sligo Family Resource Centre, Enniscrone, on Thursday, September 26, from 11am to 1pm for their Hospice Coffee Morning. Grab a coffee/tea, cake and have a chat all in aid of Hospice.

Choir practice

The Enniscrone Church Choir restarted their weekly practices on Thursday evenings at 8pm on the gallery in Enniscrone Church. New members are very welcome and you do not need to read music in order to join, just come along before 8pm.

Book Club

The Book Club are meeting again on Thursday, September 26, at 8pm in Kilglass Parish Community Centre. They are currently reading, ‘The Women’ by Kristen Hannah. If you know of anyone that may be interested, please let them know, and message the Kilglass Parish Community Centre Facebook page.

Join the Student Council

The Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone Student Council is very important as it represents the ‘student voice’ in the school and Ms Corr is it’s coordinator. The school has a strong tradition of students bringing about real change and negotiating and discussing new ideas. The Student Council can have a real impact in the school for good and is a great opportunity for personal development through training and working with staff and management. Blotto

The numbers drawn in the Enniscrone combined football clubs blotto draw, which was held on Sunday, September 15, were 8, 13 and 42. There was no jackpot winner. The €25 prizewinners were Andrina Rogan, John Barrett, Roger Maye and Karen Battle. The jackpot in the latest draw, which was held in McNulty’s Bar on Sunday, September 22, was €7800.

Credit Union seeks volunteers

Free training in areas of financial skills, compliance, risk management and cyber security are just some of the opportunities that await volunteer officers who sign up to give their services to Ballina Credit Union.

Ballina Credit Union, with an asset base of over €105m, is an independent financial co-operative, owned by its members from around the West Sligo and North Mayo area, and governed by a board of directors and sub-committees of the board.

Volunteers are currently required. Volunteers are at the heart of Ballina Credit Union and the organisation relies on their enthusiasm and skills in order to achieve its goals and continue to deliver a strong service within the community.

The credit union movement is founded on the principles of co-operation, equality and mutual self-help, and thrives on the efforts of thousands of volunteers who freely give their time and skills to benefit their local credit union.

Those with qualifications and skills relevant to the financial sector are welcome, but Ballina Credit Union also requires volunteers with skills in other disciplines such as business, marketing, cyber security, legal, compliance or HR, or who might have general organisational and governance experience.

Volunteers will be provided with support and ongoing free training, and will benefit from gaining new skills and experience, meeting like-minded people and the satisfaction of giving something back to the community.

The late James Rafter

The death took place of James Rafter, Ardvalley, Ballina, peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his wife Nellie, his brothers and sisters. James was beloved father and will be sadly missed by his daughters Mary, Christina and son Gerard, sons-in-law Joe and Tommy, daughter-in-law Mary, grandchildren Colin, Ciara, Sean, Niamh, Patrick, James, Claire, Paul, Marie, Jane, James, Maeve and Neil, relatives and friends.

James reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Monday evening, September 16, from 5 to 7pm and arrived at St Joseph’s Church, Castleconnor at 7.30pm. Requiem Mass was held on Tuesday morning at 11am with his funeral proceeding to Killanley Cemetery for burial. May he rest in peace.

Castleconnor GAA Club express their heartfelt condolences to the family of James Rafter in Ardvalley. ‘James’s daughter Christina takes the pictures of the senior team in which her son Paul is captain. It was a difficult day on Sunday for Paul in which he showed great leadership lining out for our senior team shortly after his grandfathers passing. James’s grandsons and granddaughters would all have lined out with Castleconnor in different periods over the years. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam’, said a spokesperson.

Coaching officer at Castleconnor GAA Club, Bernie Finley, is organising fun and games for children with additional needs in the coming months.
