The Moy Singers chose Teach an Uisce to donate funds from their Spring concert in the Great National Hotel Ballina. They are busy preparing for their very popular annual Carols by Candlelight concert in the Great National Hotel, Ballina, on Friday, November 28. Great sadness at passing of Marian Browne

The death has taken place of Marian Browne (née Hanley), Convent Hill Crescent, Ballina and formerly of Carrowmacbrien, Rathlee, Co Sligo. 

Marian was a pillar of the community in Ballina for her decades-long involvement in local organisations.

A spirited, caring and hard-working volunteer, she was secretary of Ballina Stephenites GAA Club and Bord na nÓg for several years and was also strongly associated with other local organisations, including Order of Malta Ballina, Ballina Squash Club and 5th Mayo Scout Group. In 2023, Marian was the recipient of the Ballina Salmon Festival Spirit of the Festival Award, recognising her long and selfless service to the festival and the wider Ballina community.

She will be sadly missed by her sons Seamus and Peter, brother Micheál, sister-in-law Martina, brothers-in-law Simon and Jimmy, sister-in-law Patricia, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband Peter, son Micheál and parents Michael John and Mary.

Marian reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina on Thursday evening last. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina on Friday, followed by burial in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina.

May she rest in peace.

Rejoice choir commemoration 

Rejoice Gospel Choir, Ballina is holding a special Mass in honour of its deceased members on Sunday next, November 16. The Mass in St Patrick’s Church, Ballina is at 12pm.

Under the direction of its dynamic musical director Jack Cronin, who took over the role one year ago, Rejoice Gospel Choir is a group which celebrates faith and spirituality through the medium of uplifting spiritual songs.

The mixed-voice group sang at a recent Novena in St Patrick’s Church and presented a very successful show in Belleek Castle last May, in addition to performing during Ballina’s Laneways and Sessions event as part of Culture Night 2025.

“We would love to welcome the families and friends of deceased members to Sunday’s Mass, as well as former members with their families, and other friends of Rejoice,” said Patricia Marley, the Chairperson of Rejoice Gospel Choir.

There will be light refreshments afterwards.

Bereavement Support Group 

A Bereavement Support Group meeting will take place in Ballina at 8pm tomorrow, Wednesday, November 12.

Life following a bereavement can be very lonely, and trained facilitators will offer their services in The Newman Institute to those requiring support.

All are welcome and there is no need to book in advance. Meetings are scheduled for the second Wednesday of every month.

The late Brendan Foley 

The death has taken place of Brendan Foley, Ardoughan, Ballina.

Brendan was the beloved husband of Kathryn (Kate) and dear father to Caoimhe and Brónagh.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, daughters, grandson Liam, sons-in-law Derek and Adam, brother Ray, sister Margot, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

He was predeceased by his infant son Brian, sister Geraldine and parents Maureen and Raymond.

Brendan reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina on Sunday. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina yesterday (Monday), followed by burial in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina.

Art exhibition

The talented artists from the regular art class of Craoibhín Ballina will present an exhibition of their work in Ballina Library this week. 

The creative pieces of the exhibition, which is titled ‘Ballina and Surrounds’, will be unveiled at a launch on Friday, November 14. There will be music and light refreshments on the night.

The exhibition will run upstairs in Ballina Library, Pearse Street until Friday, November 29.

Belleek Forest upgrades 

The Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, last week allocated €400,000 from his Department’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) to two strategic local projects: Belleek Forest, Ballina and the Kilcummin Loop.

Some €200,000 has been allocated to Belleek Woods Enhancement Committee, working with Mayo County Council, to repair and upgrade the trails. A further €200,000 has been allocated to Mayo North East for the upgrade of existing routes on the Kilcummin Loop.

Minister Calleary thanked Mayo County Council, Mayo North East, the local committees and Councillors Annie May Reape and Michael Loftus for their assistance.

Meanwhile, the Belleek Woods Enhancement Committee is looking for volunteers who are willing to help with some light tasks such as planting bulbs for flowers and putting up nesting boxes. If you are interested, then please email belleekwoodscommittee@gmail.com.

The late Mary Walsh 

The death has taken place of Mary Walsh (née Gillard), Rathreedane, Bonniconlon, Ballina.

Mary was dearly loved and will be very sadly missed by her heartbroken daughters Esther and Dervla, sons-in-law John and Brendan, cherished grandchildren Ben, Cillian, Aisling, Noah and Jake, loving sister Anne (New Jersey), sister-in-law Madeline, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and many friends.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Tony, adored son Fergal and cherished grandson baby Adam.

Mary reposed at her residence. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday of last week in the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Bonniconlon, followed by burial in Bonniconlon Cemetery.

May she rest in peace.

The annual Mass for deceased members of Ardnaree Sarsfields GAA Club will take place in the Sean Duffy Community Centre, Ardnaree, Ballina on Friday, November 14, at 7pm.

It will be followed by the Bord na nÓg Awards presentation.

The late Patricia O’Hara 

The death has taken place of Patricia O’Hara (née Dowd), Carrentrila, Ballina.

Patricia is survived by her beloved children Stephen (Geraldine), Carmel (Paddy Bourke), Deirdre (Bob Stowe) and Angie (Damian Jones), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, brother Eddie Dowd, and sisters Bridie Lennon (London), Kay McDonagh (Mount Falcon) and Veronica Ruane (Luton).

She was predeceased by her husband Frank, brother PJ and sisters Mary-Jo, Anne and Martina.

Patricia reposed at the residence of her daughter Angie in Carrentrila, Ballina on Thursday of last week. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated in St Teresa’s Church, Rathduff, Ballina on Friday, with the funeral proceeding afterwards to Ballinahaglish Cemetery.

May she rest in peace.

Kilmoremoy Ladies’ AGM 

Kilmoremoy Ladies Gaelic Football Club, Ballina is inviting new volunteers to help out within the club for the coming year, as it announces the date for its annual general meeting.

Ardagh

Successful fundraiser

Ardagh’s James Carr wishes to thank everyone who participated and donated prizes for his recent fundraising table quiz in Mickey O’Boyle’s in aid of his upcoming trip to Uganda to assist the charity Self Help Africa as part of the Plant the Planet Games. 

James will be one of 50 well-known GAA players amongst others who will embark on planting one million trees in Africa over a period of time. 

The tree planting will be of enormous benefit to the Ugandan population as it will provide a valuable source of food through its fruit, restores degraded land, improves soil quality, shade and shelter, and help prevent soil erosion, each leaving a lasting legacy.

Cash for Clobbers

The Parents' Association of the Moffatt School of Irish Dancing has organised a cash for clothes event at Ardagh Community Centre car park next Saturday, November 15, from 10am to 1pm. 

Eligible items for the fundraising event include ladies, children’s and men’s clothing, paired shoes tied together and in good condition, hats, scarves, ties, belts, handbags, curtains and soft toys - all in clean condition. What is not acceptable will be soiled/wet clothes, mats/carpets, single shoes, pillow/duvet covers and cut off materials.

Wreath demonstration

Eilish Egan from www.blossoms.ie and Ardagh Social Services are holding a wreath-making demonstration in Ardagh Community Centre on Wednesday week, November 19, from 7.30pm.

Eilish will demonstrate how to make a Christmas wreath and a fun festive piece. Admission is €10 payable at the door, which includes a raffle ticket for the chance to win the pieces made by Eilish.

Novel initiative

Ardagh Community Centre was used as a polling station for the recent Presidential election. It was used on a pilot basis and was well received from all sections of the community, attracting very positive local and national media attention. 

Dermot O’Boyle and his community centre committee deserve great credit for their novel initiative.

Condolences

Ardagh Community Council wishes to express sincere condolences to Breege, John and the O’Hora family on the recent death of Breege’s father Martin Gallagher.
