Local Notes: Kiltimagh Scouts youth members took part in 10th Mayo Scouts fundraising hike

The 10th Mayo Scouts fundraising Hike that took off from the GAA Park after Christmas and covered 13.3km up around Sliabh Cairn and back was a great success. The hike was organised by Kiltimagh Scouts Youth members

The death took place peacefully at the Claremont Nursing Home, Claremorris of Anne Lavin née Staid, Churchpark, Kiltimagh. News of her death was greeted with a deep sense of sadness in the community and beyond where Anne was a much loved and well known lady. She was a lively and jolly person who always met you with a smile and loved to stop for a chat. She was a talented gardener and a former member of Castlebar Garening Club where she won many prizes. Her own garden and surrounds at the side of the Balla Rd was always a riot of colour which was regularly commented on and was an inspiration to everyone who loves flowers and plants.

She also loved dancing and music and she and her late husband Michael of over 60 years set off regularly to the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival where she said they always had a wonderful time. She also was a regular at the monthly Contact socials in Kiltimagh where she enjoyed the company of her friends and neighbours. She will be missed not only by her family but by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Predeceased by her husband Michael she was the beloved mother of Martin, Maureen, Michael, Angela, Joseph, Margaret and Derek. She is also survived by her sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, sisters-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren, her brother Jack Staid, nieces and nephews. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

Ann reposed at her family home in Churchpark, on Tuesday evening, January 2. Funeral Mass was on Wednesday at 12 noon in the Church of the Holy Family with burial afterwards in Kilkinure Cemetery.

May she rest in peace.

Poker League final

The final of the latest season of the Kiltimagh Poker League will be played this Wednesday night, January 17, in Teach O’Hora when fourteen players compete for a prizepool of €2,820. The final two rounds were played recently and the results were, Round 14 (19 players), 1 Isaac Boyle, 2 Kerian Magee, 3 Michael Sheridan, 4 Keith Lydon. Round 15 (24 players), 1 Pat Boyle, 2 Thomas Sweeney, 3 Keith Lydon, 4 John Reynolds. Michael Sheridan finished top of the league table on 277 points with Paul Walsh second on 273 and Michael Higgins third on 267. The rest of the top twelve is Gerry Groarke 237, John Reynolds 229, Thomas McDonagh 220, Keith Lydon 213, John Borza 210, Enda Ruane 209, Julian Keane 197, Pat Boyle 187 and AN Other 183. These twelve qualified automatically for the final and will be joined by the two qualifiers from the playoff game, Kieran Magee and Francis McDonagh.

The all important chipstacks for the final are; Michael Sheridan 42,700, Paul Walsh 39,200, Michael Higgins 36,700, Gerry Groarke 32,200, John Reynolds 29,900, Thomas McDonagh 28,000, Keith Lydon 26,800, John Borza 26,000, Enda Ruane 25,400, Julian Keane 23,700, Pat Boyle 22,200, AN Other 21,300, Kieran Magee 16,700, Francis MacDonagh 12,800.

In the regular Wednesday night game on January 10, Mossie O’Connell won first prize with Keith Lydon second, Enda Ruane was third and John Borza fourth. A new fifteen week league starts next Wednesday, January 25, in Teach O’Hora with cards in the air at 8pm. Entry is €20 with one re-entry allowed for 90 minutes. €5 from every entry goes towards the league final prizepool with the rest paid out in prizemoney on the night. The league runs every Wednesday night with fourteen players qualifying for the end of season final to play for a prizepool of approx €3,000.

Poker satellite results

There were twenty entries for the Westport Cup satellite on Sunday, January 7 in Teach O’Hora with the top three players, Nuala Nolan, Tiernan Burke and Majella Gill all winning a €300 entry to the big game. The Westport Cup is the main event of the Irish Poker Tour festival in the Castlecourt Hotel at the end of the month and boasts a guaranteed prizepool of €100,000. Another qualifying satellite for this game will be held in Teach O’Hora on Sunday, January 21, at 4pm.

The late Bridget O’Brien 

The death took place recently at the Ave Maria Nursing Home in Tooreen, of Bridget O’Brien née Geraghty, Cuiltybo, Kiltimagh. Some lovely tributes to Bridget posted on social media described her as a lovely, kind lady who always had a smile on her face and a big welcome for those who visited her home. News of her death was greeted with sadness in the Cuiltybo area and indeed by all those who had the privilege of knowing her down through the years and who will miss her as will her beloved family. May she rest in peace.

Predeceased by her husband Tom, daughters Mary and Una, sisters Mary and Anne and brothers Patrick and Martin; she is survived by her sorrowing daughters Rita and Margaret, sons Martin, David and John, grandchildren Stevie and Rory Caulfield, Tommy, Marian, Roisin, Caoimhe, Paul and Keenan O’Brien, Sean, Dermot and Sinead Ryan, daughters-in-law Caroline and Eileen, son- in-law Mike, nieces Margaret and Marian, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Bridget reposed at O'Hora's Funeral Home, followed by removal to the Church of the Holy Family, Kiltimagh. Funeral Mass was next day with burial afterwards in Kilkinure Cemetery.

KK 50/50

The Christmas winner of Kiltimagh Knock United's 50/50 draw was Danny Doherty from Kiltimagh. Danny the last winner of 2023 picked up a cheque for €477. Thanks to everyone who has supported the draw over the past 12 months. Thanks also to Kavanagh's Supervalu Kiltimagh, Sean and all his team for giving the club the opportunity to sell at their front door pre Christmas.

Fitness fundraiser

Kiltimagh Knock United senior team is holding a fitness challenge this month, running 1,500 kilometres in support of Western Care. During January, the players and coaches, along with committee members and The Hub members at the KK clubhouse, will complete runs and walks of various distances, to be added up to try and reach the target.

Funds raised will go to The Hub, which is ran by Western Care and based at KK's clubhouse in Cloonlee. Donations can be made through GoFundMe (https://gofund.me/81a15a65) or by putting your donation in a marked envelope and placing it in one of the many 50/50 boxes in shops around the area. All donations, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciate.

Two big jackpots in a row

After picking up a cheque for €828 at the GAA club's last 50/50 draw of 2023 held in Kitty's on December 30, Adam Byrne started the new year where he left off winning another big prize of €630 at the first draw of the new year in Teach O'Hora's on Saturday, January 6. Congratulations Adam and enjoy the spending but please give others a chance in the coming months! The club thank everyone for their support throughout the past year and wish them a Happy and Prosperous 2024.

Evening classes

Part time evening classes will be starting in January/February at St Louis Community School, Kiltimagh. Classes on offer include art, bridge for beginners, introduction to CAD (Solid Works), photography, public speaking, wellbeing, learning the tin whistle, cooking with confidence, Level 5 QQI, Care of Older person, care skills, special needs assisting, children with additional needs, infection prevention and control, bookkeeping and computerised, payroll manual and computerised, Level 6 QQI.

Courses will run according to demand. Payments for Levels 5 and 6 QQI can be made in instalments during the duration of the course. Card results

The winners of the first prize at the 25 Drive held in Kiltimagh were Kathleen Gill and John Walsh, joint second were Tom Flatley and Francis McNicholas and Michael Carney and Manus Kilcoyne. Last 10 prize shared by Mary Campbell and Ray Duffy and Joe Boyle and Tom Conroy, spot prize winners Mary and Jimmy Doyle and winners in the raffle were Michael Carney, Hilary Foley and Martin Regan. A special ‘Thank You’ draw was made for Christmas Hampers which were won by Hugh Forde, Manus Kilcoyne and Michael Costello.

Game starts every Thursday night at 9pm in the Parish Centre (at rear of church).

Quiz night

The annual Kiltimagh Knock United table quiz, held in the Cill Aodain Court Hotel, was a huge success, with a packed attendance. Thanks to the senior team players and management for organising the event, to the Cill Aodain for hosting, and to all who supported the event.

Bridge

The results of the first Bridge game of 2024 held in the Park Hotel last Tuesday night were 1st Thomas McNicholas and Cait McTigue, 2nd Jimmy and Kathleen Morley, 3rd Jerome Tarpey and Noreen Reddington, 4th Cora Waldron and Michael Cunningham, joint 5th Brenda McNicholas and Bernie Byrne, Tony King and Eileen Mulderrig.

Bereavement support

The Knock Shrine Bereavement Support group meet every Wednesday at 11am at the Family Centre, Knock. Following a family bereavement you can feel very lonely. Sometimes spending time with others who know the experience can be helpful. Further information contact Monica Morley 094 9375320.
