Local notes: Host of Salmon Festival events in store

Heritage Day tea and cake fundraiser 

Teas, sandwiches and homemade pastries, including gluten-free goodies, will be served in Ballina Presbyterian Church Hall, Walsh Street during Heritage Day, Wednesday, July 10.

Call in from 10am onwards, with all proceeds raised going to local charities.

Walsh Street is located just off Pearse Street, Ballina and the hall is close to the entrance to the Jackie Clarke Collection.

Kathleen Lynn Lane activities 

As part of the Cascade programme, Ballina Salmon Festival will host some activities in Kathleen Lynn Lane, Ballina on Friday, July 12.

The Cascade project in Ballina involves a series of events and creative workshops throughout 2024 and 2025 during which local residents can share their experiences of water and public space in the town, and imagine solutions that may help Ballina’s laneways better adapt and cope with the water-related threats of a changing climate.

Cascade, funded by Creative Ireland’s Creative Climate Action Fund II, builds on the previous Ripple project in Greenhills, Ballina, which last year won a prestigious New European Bauhaus Award.

The Ballina Climate Action Project team includes local architect and urbanist Kevin Loftus and Councillor Mark Duffy, co-founders of Ballina – Ireland’s Greenest Town.

Ballina Salmon Festival is inviting people to drop into Kathleen Lynn Lane, which is located between O’Rahilly Street (beside Hogan’s Pub) and Teeling Street Car Park, anytime between 10am and 4pm.

Defective concrete blocks support 

A Defective Concrete Blocks (DCB) Community Facilitator is available to guide homeowners in Ballina and surrounding areas through the application process for the DCB grant scheme, in particular disadvantaged and/or vulnerable individuals and families, and to facilitate access to the relevant support services.

Community development organisation Mayo North East Partnership is working with Mayo County Council to provide this service, and has two DCB Community Facilitators in place throughout Mayo.

Clinics are by appointment only in Ballina, North Mayo, Castlebar and Westport. These clinics are free of charge and are completely confidential.

Mayo North East Partnership is also seeking expressions of interest from anyone in this region who may have storage units, rental property, holiday home or vacant property that is available to rent and who wish to have their facility or house included in a list of retained rentals for homeowners affected by defective concrete blocks.

Mindspace Outreach service in Ballina 

Mindspace Mayo offers a support service in Ballina to young people presenting with anything from common concerns, such as dealing with break-up, exam stress or bullying, to emerging mental health difficulties like mild depression and anxiety.

The service is for those young people between the ages of 12 and 25.

The outreach service runs three days a week, Monday to Wednesday, in the Ballina Family Resource Centre, Abbey Street, Ardnaree, and anyone can make a referral.

It is a free and confidential service and if a young person wants support, Mindspace Mayo staff are there to listen and to provide supportive guidance, without making judgements.

Accommodation at Father Peyton Centre 

The Father Peyton Centre in Attymass is now offering accommodation in The Melody Residence. The accommodation is located beside the centre, and is a Failte Ireland approved premises. All rooms are wheelchair accessible.

The Father Peyton Visitor Centre is located around 10 kilometres from Ballina, and in the heart of beautiful countryside. It honours local man Fr Patrick Peyton, known to millions during the middle of the last century, internationally, and especially in The United States, as the Rosary Priest.

Some amazing loop walks start from this delightful part of North Mayo where you will also discover beautiful cycling routes.

Ronan Clarke charity run 

The 10th annual Ronan Clarke 5km and 10km charity run and walk will take place on Sunday, July 21 at 12 noon, in association with Killala GAA Club and The Clarke Family.

The fundraiser honours the memory of popular clubman and television presenter Ronan Clarke, who died 10 years ago.

The 5km and 10km run/walk will depart from Killala Community Centre, with registration opening from 10.30am. All proceeds will be donated to The Mayo Roscommon Hospice and Killala GAA Club Benevolent Fund, and your support will be greatly appreciated.

This year's race will be started by the 2024 Mayo Person of the Year, Rita Casey.

The late Stella MacDermott 

The death has taken place, in her 96th year, of Stella MacDermott (née Vaughan), Morrison Terrace, Ballina. Stella was the beloved mother of Thérèse (Jackson McCarthy), Stella (Ruttledge) and PJ.

She will be sadly missed by her loving daughters, son, grandchildren Eryka, Lee, Shauna, Clare, Paul, David, Cormac and Clodagh, great grandchildren, sons-in-law PJ and John, daughter-in-law Monica, relatives, neighbours and friends.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Paddy, parents Micheal and Elizabeth Vaughan, and brother Mícheál.

Stella reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina, followed by burial in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina.

Reading adventure for children

Ballina Library is inviting youngsters to come along and sign up for the Summer Stars reading adventure.

Summer Stars is a national reading programme for children that takes place in all public libraries and online each summer. It is non-competitive and every child who reads even one book or e-book is regarded as having completed the programme – and it’s all completely free!

Reading booklets can be collected from the library on Pearse Street.

The Summer Stars programme runs until August 31.

The late Gerry Mangan 

The death has taken place of Gerry Mangan, Behy Beg, Ballina.

Gerry is deeply mourned by his loving brothers Micheal, Paddy and Tom, sisters Breege and Ann, brothers-in-law Micheal, Tony and Tom, sisters-in-law Patsy and Millie, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Joe and Annie, infant brother, sister Margaret and nephew Michael.

Gerry reposed at Gallagher’s Funeral Home, Bonniconlon. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina on Monday of last week, with burial afterwards in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina.

Funding for Ballina community groups 

Mayo County Council is seeking Expressions of Interest for funding under the latest Community Recognition Fund 2024. The funding comes from the Department of Rural and Community Development, with a total of €50m available nationally.

The Community Recognition Fund 2024 aims to support the development of community infrastructure and facilities for the entire community in recognition of the contribution being made by communities across the country in welcoming and hosting significant numbers of arrivals from Ukraine and other countries.

Funding is specifically targeted at projects that are located in cities, towns and villages that are hosting the Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection and/or International Protection Applicants, including towns identified for the rapid build homes programme.

The Fund aims to support the development of facilities that will be used in the future by all members of the community.

It is separate in its objectives and scope to any other public funding streams which aim to support the development of public service needs arising from the significant number of arrivals from Ukraine and other countries.

The online application portal is open for submissions until 3pm on Thursday, July 11.

Enniscrone electronica for Ballina Arts Centre 

Art of Alegbra is creative music artist David Hallinan from Enniscrone, known to his friends as Jack. His 2019 self-titled debut album delivered 11 tracks of mystical electronica, with the stylish ‘Maasai’ earning him considerable acclaim and becoming ‘Track of the Week’ on Dan Hegarty’s 2FM show.

He performed at last year’s Ballina Fringe Festival, as well as at Wild and Well Festival in Enniscrone.

Art of Alegbra will be bringing his remarkable creative skills to Ballina Arts Centre on July 20, together with co-collaborator Afro-Irish MC Breezy iDeyGoke.

David played bass guitar with a number of cover bands before moving to Paris some years ago and discovering electronic music. The Sligo electronic producer blends a mix of electronica sub-genres, including trip-hop, downtempo, darkwave and the LA ‘Beat-Scene’, and inspired by artists like Boards of Canada, Massive Attack, Rival Consoles, Teebs and Andy Stott.

Breezy iDeyGoke is an Afro-Irish artist renowned for fusing musical influences of rap, r&b and afrobeat, all while presenting his message with cool-headed lyricism. Breezy has cultivated a unique brand of colourful, bold and rhythmic sounds.

The pair will be bringing their signature electronic trip-hop vibe to the Ballina venue, along with specially curated visual projections that will create a fully immersive and unique audio-visual live experience.

The show takes place in Ballina Arts Centre on Saturday, July 20 at 8pm.

Telus Salmon Run Triathlon 

The Telus Salmon Run Triathlon will take place in Ballina on Saturday, July 27, at 11am.

Organised by Ballina’s Liquid Motion Triathlon Club, the event is for adults only (over-18s), and is a perfect challenge for seasoned triathletes. It will test participants on a 0.75km swim on the River Moy, a 20km bike ride through the beautiful surrounds of Ballina and, finally, a 5km flat run to The Quay, returning to the finish line at Bachelor’s Walk in Ballina town centre, on the shores of the River Moy.
