Local Notes: Former Kiltimagh/Knock Utd player features in historic game

Former Kiltimagh/Knock United man, John Mountney, made history last week when he played for Bohemians FC in their 1-0 win over Shamrock Rovers in the opening round of the Airtricity League of Ireland. The game, which was played at the Aviva Stadium, attracted 33,208 spectators, an all-time record crowd for a League of Ireland match. 

John signed for Bohs for this season after many years - and trophies - with Dundalk FC.

Micheál to continue in role

Mayo FC is delighted to confirm that Head of Goalkeeping, Micheál Schlingermann, will be continuing for the 2025 season. The club is fortunate to have someone of Micheál's experience, knowledge, and expertise involved. His dedication and leadership will be invaluable as the club continues to grow, and is looking forward to an exciting season ahead.

Paul wins GAA 50/50 

Paul Kelly was the winner of last week’s GAA 50/50 jackpot. Paul won €587 in the draw which was held in O’Hora’s.

Youthreach make regional finals 

Two entries from Youthreach, Kiltimagh have qualified for the regional finals of the national Junk Kouture competition which will be held in The Helix, Dublin, on March 6th.

The pieces are entitled ‘Floral Fury’, which is about mental health and empowerment, and ‘Wired,’ which is about humanity’s relationship with artificial intelligence. Youthreach co-ordinator, Geraldine Doherty, leads the team behind ‘Floral Fury,’ with Rianna Prendergast (model,) Vanessa McNicholas and Samantha Dumpe. 

Teacher Adrian Mangan leads the team behind ‘Wired,’ with model, Gabrielle Bacyte, and Eva Kundzina.

The competition is open to 12 to 19-year-olds in secondary education. Students are challenged to create a fashion couture outfit from 100% recycled materials and bring it to life on a global stage.

Signed for Mayo FC 

Four Kiltimagh Knock United players have moved to the national league, joining Mayo FC this season. Aoife Collins and Aine Monaghan have signed for the Mayo FC Under 19 girls, with Ava Mitchell on the Under 17 team. Seamus Comer will line out for the Mayo FC Under 15 boys.

All four have given sterling service to Kiltimagh Knock United and are wished every success in this new chapter of their football careers.

Calling ex-Pen and Ink members 

The Kiltimagh Writers’ Group, known as Pen and Ink, is inviting previous members to ‘Pen Folk’, an event to celebrate the group’s continuing service to its members and its links with Kiltimagh.

Pen and Ink was founded in 2007 by the writer Terry McDonagh, with encouragement from the Mayo Arts Office. Its members include writers of prose and writers of poetry.

‘Pen Folk’ is also a celebration of The Folk Café, Kiltimagh, which was opened in autumn 2022 by two traditional musicians, Elish and Mick Griffin. It has proved to be a great supporter of musicians, singers and writers. Regular music sessions are held on Fridays from 11am to 1pm and an Open Mic is held one evening a month. Musicians often drop in and play at other times, too. Additionally, local charities have benefitted from the generosity of the proprietors and customers.

The celebration is to be held in The Folk Café, on Saturday, March 29, starting at 7.30pm. It will consist of readings by current and past Pen and Ink members, an Open Mic for all-comers and music. Refreshments will be provided. For details, contact Anni on penandink.comayo@aol.com.

KKU 50/50 

The winner of last week's Kiltimagh Knock United 50/50 lotto jackpot was Nicole Carty from Knock. Nicole collected €280 for supporting her local club. 

The club thanks all who bought tickets and support the fundraising draw each week.

Women’s Group 

The next meeting of the Women’s Group will take place in the Parish Centre on Monday, March 3rd, at 7pm. The speaker on the night will be Aisling Byrne who will speak on the topic of healthy eating, pre-diabetes. All ladies are welcome to attend.

Bridge 

The bridge winners for February 11th were Michael Gallagher and Leona Connery. Brenda McNicholas and Bernie Byrne came second with Ray Nally and Mary Colahan finishing third.

The February 18th winners were Maeve Duffy and Maureen Carney. Second place went to Jerome Tarpey and Geraldine Forde, and third to Michael Gallagher and Leona Connery.

Bridge is held in the Park Hotel every Tuesday at 7.30pm. The club is open to new members joining at any time. Casual pairs are also welcome. Bridge classes are available for beginners and anybody interested can contact John McCrohan on 087-2422945.

St Patrick’s Day Parade

The annual Kiltimagh St Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Sunday, March 16th, at 3pm. 

The Kiltimagh Tourism Festivals organising committee is calling all businesses, groups, clubs, schools, bands and individuals to help make 2025 a parade to remember.

This year’s parade theme is 'Home is Where the Heart is'. This promises to be a celebration of pride in Irish culture and history, in community, and in celebrating the cultures of those from all over the world who have made the local community their home. The committee invites Coilltes living away to come home to join the community, to celebrate our patron saint and national holiday. There are big cash prizes on offer for the parade.

Keith is poker winner 

Eighteen players took to the felt for Round 3 of the Spring Poker League in Teach O’Hora on Wednesday night, generating a prize-pool of €595. 

In the heads-up battle, Keith Lydon came out on top to win first prize with Michael Higgins in second place. Isaac Boyle was third and Michael Sheridan fourth. The other finalists were, 5th, Martin Regan; 6th, AN Other; 7th, John Reynolds; 8th, Nicky Cunnane; 9th, Paul Walsh. 

Michael Sheridan remains top of the league table on 54 points, followed by Isaac Boyle on 48 and Michael Higgins on 45. The rest of the top twelve is AN Other 42, Douglas Wicks 40, Pat Boyle 39, Paul Walsh 35, Martin Regan 34, John Reynolds 34, Derry O’Sullivan 34, Keith Lydon 31, Nicky Cunnane 31.

The league runs for 15 weeks with tournaments every Wednesday night at 8pm. Entry is €20 with one rebuy or add-on allowed, also €20. €5 from each entry and rebuy goes towards the league final prize pool with the rest paid out on the night. At the end of the league, the top twelve players qualify for the Grand Final and they will be joined by two others from a last-chance play-off to play for an estimated prize pool of €2,000.

Hazel wins monthly award 

Hazel Finn has been chosen as The Irish Times Sportswoman of the Month for January 2025.

Hazel helped FloMAX Liffey Celtics claim the Paudie O’Connor National Cup, with a 12-point win over Killester, at the National Basketball Arena in January. Hazel gave an energetic performance at both ends of the court and she picked up the Most Valuable Player Award with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Win a Nissan Qashqai for €20 

The Federation of Victim Assistance (FVA,) the national charity dedicated to supporting victims and individuals in vulnerable situations, is running a draw with a brand new Nissan Qashqai on offer for the winner.

Victims Assistance is a voluntary, non-profit charity, comprising of fully trained volunteers offering emotional and practical assistance to all victims of crime and those that have experienced a traumatic incident. The service is also available to family members of victims.

Tickets for the draw are priced at €20 each with three for €50 and can be purchased by calling into their offices at Aiden Street or by ringing 1800 277 477. They are also available online at www.victimassistance.ie.

Mary and Liam Moran won last week’s card game which was held in the Parish Centre. Mike Nolan and John Clancy and Francis McNicholas and Tom Flatley were runners-up. 

The Last 10 winners were Tom Conroy and Joe Boyle with spot prizes going to Pius Forde and Danny Walsh. The raffle winners were Liam Moran, Pius Forde, Michael Carney and Mary Doyle.

KKU defeated

Kiltimagh/Knock United lost their opening fixture in the new Mayo Super League, going down 3-1 away to Glenhest Rovers. They were two down at the break, but narrowed the gap through an own goal, only to see their hosts add a third near the end.

The late Margaret Higgins

The death has occurred of Margaret Higgins, of Thomas Street and formerly of Aidan Street, Kiltimagh. 

Margaret died peacefully on February 18th at Mayo University Hospital, and was predeceased by her parents Frank and Frances. She will be sadly missed by her brother John, sister Mary (Nunan), nieces and nephews Catherine, Frank, Kevin and Vera (Freddie), grand-nephew Finn (Schmeisser), sister-in-law Mary, brother-in-law Eamon, relatives, neighbours and many good friends. 

Margaret was laid to rest in Kilkinure Cemetery after the Funeral Mass on Friday in the Church of the Holy Family.

May she rest in peace.
